Buy for only $ 53.80, SS "kit" offered on any Impala SS. It included inside and outside the Super Sport trim, chassis reinforcement, stronger springs and shocks, power brakes with sintered metallic linings, spinner-type wheel guards and one of the first Chevy Impala to narrow band white wall tires. Dashboard acquired Chevrolet Corvette-type handle passenger and the steering column has a 7000-rpm tachometer.

Chevy Impala 491,000 built for '61. Only 453 had a package and the SS-net 142 409. But word quickly spread. Here was a mainstream Chevy V-8 with 409 pounds-feet of torque and power to get back in the mid 15-second quarter-mile standard 3.36:1 rear axle and the mandatory four-speed manual. "It is really fine, my 409," sang the Beach Boys, and the legend was born.
